NFL’s Plan to Dominate Streaming and Movies in Hollywood
The NFL is teaming up with Skydance Sports to create scripted dramas, movies, and their very first streaming series. Some exciting projects in the pipeline include a film about legendary coach John Madden and a holiday movie focusing on the Giants’ “Mr. Irrelevant.” Plus, there’s a Hulu series called “The Land” centered around the Cleveland Browns, aiming to attract a wider audience beyond typical football fans.
While the NFL has joked about conspiracy theories surrounding scripted drama for years, they’re now diving headfirst into Hollywood production. By bringing on top writers from the entertainment industry, the league is looking to tell compelling stories about the NFL through upcoming movies like the ones about John Madden and the Giants, as well as the series on Hulu featuring fictional characters and the Cleveland Browns, starring Christopher Meloni, Mandy Moore, and William H. Macy.
This move marks the NFL’s push into expanding its audience through theatrical releases and streaming content. It’s not just about showcasing real team names and logos – it’s about crafting captivating narratives that appeal to a wide range of viewers, from die-hard football fans to those who might not typically watch the game.
According to Sportico, NFL games dominated television ratings, with 84 of the top 100 shows watched last year and 93 out of 100 the year before. Skydance Sports head, Jason Reed, highlighted the importance of engaging various demographics within the NFL’s massive audience. The upcoming movies and series serve as fan service, connecting with different towns and franchise fans while also drawing in new viewers who might not otherwise tune in to watch a football game.
