Brooklyn College Faculty and Alumnae Awarded Guggenheim Fellowships 2026

Brooklyn College is thrilled to announce the 2026 Guggenheim Fellows, who are being recognized for their remarkable contributions to scholarship and the arts. Among this distinguished group are Professor of History Karen B. Stern Gabbay, Adjunct Professor of Sonic Arts Marina Rosenfeld, Adjunct Professor of English Madeleine Thien, and alumna Haruna Lee ’14 M.F.A.

Haruna Lee, based in Brooklyn, wears many hats as a theater maker, educator, screenwriter, and community steward. Their work often delves into themes of cultural identity, family, and communication. Lee has received numerous accolades and awards for their plays and TV writing, showcasing their talent and dedication to storytelling across different mediums. Currently, Lee is working on a fascinating project called DADBOT, which explores the intersection of technology, performance, and familial relationships.

Marina Rosenfeld, a composer and artist in New York, is known for her innovative works that combine sound and visual elements. She has showcased her work in prestigious institutions and festivals around the world. Rosenfeld’s project “Nulls” focuses on the sonic and sculptural aspects of sound inscription, promising to be a unique and immersive experience for audiences.

Karen B. Stern Gabbay, a respected scholar and award-winning author, is recognized for her interdisciplinary work that bridges history, material culture, and religious studies. Her current project on the ancient synagogues promises to revolutionize our understanding of Jewish history through archaeology and sensory experiences, solidifying her reputation as a leading voice in her field.

Madeleine Thien, an accomplished author and professor, has made significant contributions to literature over the past 25 years. Her work delves into a wide range of topics, from music to totalitarianism, showcasing her versatility and depth as a writer. Her upcoming project, “A Kind of Beginning,” promises to be a compelling exploration of talent, transformation, and sisterhood.
