Laura Linney on starring in a notorious film: One of the great bad movies of our time

Laura Linney recently sat down for an interview and shared some insights into her career, including stories about working with actors like Mark Ruffalo and Jason Bateman. In a wide-ranging discussion with The Independent’s series Life in Pictures, Linney delved into her experiences on films like You Can Count On Me, The Truman Show, Love, Actually, and even touched on what she called “one of the great bad movies” of our time.

This “great bad movie” that Linney referred to is Congo, released in 1995, which marked her debut lead role in an action film. Directed by Frank Marshall and based on a novel by Michael Crichton, the movie follows an expedition team encountering a dangerous species of gorillas in Africa. Despite receiving seven Golden Raspberry Award nominations for being one of the worst films, Linney has a soft spot for it, dubbing it a “delightmare.”

Reflecting on her past work, Linney humorously shared, “I haven’t watched it in so long. I’ll go back to it when I’m really old and want to feel good about myself, and be like, ‘Oh God, I was young. I was sweet – look at that. And look at my arms!’ I’ll do that.”

In addition to discussing Congo, Linney also talked about her current projects, including her role in American Classic, a sitcom where she stars alongside Jason Bateman. She also touched on her friendships with Liam Neeson and Holland Taylor and the valuable lessons she’s learned while working with Clint Eastwood multiple times.
