Caravaggio documentary from creators of acclaimed Vermeer film to premiere on streaming platform

A new documentary about Caravaggio is set to make its debut on the streaming service Marquee TV next week, as part of the Exhibition on Screen series. Directed by Phil Grabsky and David Bickerstaff, the film takes a deep dive into the life and work of the Baroque master, blending expert insights, painting analysis, and dramatized sequences to offer a comprehensive look at the artist.

Grabsky emphasizes that previous portrayals of Caravaggio have often focused on his tumultuous personal life, overshadowing his true artistic genius. The directors spent five years conducting research and traveling internationally to bring this film to life, aiming to provide a more nuanced understanding of Caravaggio and his incredible body of work.

Known for his dramatic realism and bold use of light and shadow, Caravaggio’s intense religious scenes brought him both fame and controversy during his time in Rome. His artistic legacy is explored in the documentary, shedding light on his unique approach to painting.

The filmmakers behind Caravaggio are no strangers to producing art documentaries, having previously worked on films about Van Gogh and Vermeer. Their dedication to showcasing a diverse range of artists, from Frida Kahlo to Claude Monet, has resonated with audiences and earned critical acclaim.

The documentary is set to premiere on April 6th on Marquee TV, a platform described as “Netflix for the arts” by the Financial Times. Ed Humphrey, the CEO of Marquee TV, notes the growing demand for arts programming and the platform’s expanding subscriber base, indicating a continued interest in exploring the world of art through streaming entertainment.
