HBO Max Adds Latest Billion Dollar Action Franchise Installment
HBO Max is gearing up for a busy April with a slew of new TV shows and movies on the way. But before the streamer dives into titles like Twister and The Mummy movies, they’re wrapping up March with a big addition. The latest installment in a billion-dollar action franchise has just landed on HBO Max, and fans are already buzzing about the upcoming sequel in the series.
The John Wick franchise, led by Keanu Reeves, has raked in an impressive $1.1 billion across five films, making it one of the highest-grossing action franchises of all time. The most recent addition to the series, “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” hit HBO Max on March 27th. Set between the third and fourth John Wick movies, this spin-off shifts focus to Ana de Armas’ Eve Macarro, a fierce assassin seeking revenge for her father’s death. The film is now available to stream on HBO Max, along with the rest of the John Wick franchise, as fans eagerly anticipate the release of “John Wick: Chapter 5” and a spinoff featuring Donnie Yen.
While “Ballerina” didn’t make quite as big of a splash as some of its predecessors, its $137 million worldwide gross places it as the fourth-highest-grossing film in the franchise. Despite receiving a 75% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics felt it lacked the same stylized flair as other John Wick films. However, the movie does an excellent job of expanding the universe beyond the main Continental hotel, delving deeper into the lore of the High Table and introducing new characters and factions.
“Ballerina” adds a fresh perspective to the John Wick universe, offering a more grounded take on the action while still delivering the adrenaline-pumping gun-fu sequences fans love. Ana de Armas shines in the lead role, showcasing her agility and speed in standout performances. With plenty of familiar faces and new world-building elements, “Ballerina” is a worthy addition to the franchise.
Looking ahead, HBO Max has a jam-packed lineup for April, including classic movies like the “Alien” series and “Practical Magic.” March has been a strong month for the streamer, with titles like “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” making their debut. As we gear up for a new month of streaming entertainment, there’s plenty to look forward to on HBO Max.
