Netflix Executives: Clarifying Policy on Filmmakers Repeating Plot

During a recent Oscars sketch, host Conan O’Brien and Sterling K. Brown joked about the idea that streaming platforms, like Netflix, tell filmmakers to repeat the plot to help viewers stay engaged. The sketch, inspired by Casablanca, got some laughs, but Netflix film chief Dan Lin set the record straight. Lin clarified, “We don’t repeat our plots in movies or TV shows. There’s no such principle at Netflix.”

This misconception stemmed from comments made by Matt Damon, star and producer of Netflix’s heist thriller The Rip. Damon mentioned on The Joe Rogan Experience that Netflix might ask for a big action sequence early on to keep viewers interested. However, Lin, along with series head Bela Bajaria, and Jinny Howe, vp drama series, emphasized that there’s no pressure to repeat plot points in Netflix content.

Bajaria expressed, “It’s offensive to think we would give such notes to creators. We’re focused on making great movies, not following a formula.” Howe added, “Our audiences are savvy, and we take their feedback seriously. We’re not trying to dumb things down.”

While introducing the sketch, O’Brien didn’t specify any studios, but Netflix executives were quick to address the misconception. The bottom line: at Netflix, the focus is on creating engaging content without resorting to repeating the plot. Viewers can count on Netflix titles to offer fresh and original storytelling without repetition.
