Details on Cancelled “Buffy” Reboot

Last weekend, Hulu surprisingly announced that they would not be moving forward with the planned reboot/sequel series of the beloved 1990s show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” This decision came as a shock to many fans who were looking forward to seeing Sarah Michelle Gellar reprise her role as Buffy Summers, albeit in a supporting capacity this time. Instead, the focus was supposed to shift to a new Slayer, a 16-year-old high schooler named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

Chloe Zhao, known for “Hamnet,” was set to direct the pilot episode of the series last summer. However, reports indicated that the pilot did not meet expectations, and Zhao may not have been the right fit for the project. This news left many fans disappointed and wondering what went wrong.

Variety has since obtained a shooting draft of the pilot episode, which sheds some light on why Hulu may have decided not to proceed with the series. The draft, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, revealed that Gellar’s Buffy only had a brief cameo at the end, with most of the episode focusing on the introduction of a new ‘Scooby Gang’ led by Nova. The trade also mentioned a recent rewrite that added more Buffy and aimed to mature the show’s tone, but it still did not meet Hulu’s expectations.

Following the news of Hulu’s decision, a Disney Entertainment Television spokesperson clarified that their choice not to move forward with the series was not a reflection of their respect for the creative team behind the show. The timing of the announcement was particularly unfortunate for Gellar, who received the news while attending the SXSW premiere of “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.”

In a recent radio interview, Gellar urged fans not to read the leaked pilot script circulating online, as it does not accurately represent the final product. With these recent developments, the future of the “Buffy” reboot remains uncertain, leaving many fans disappointed but hopeful for a better outcome in the future.
