Buffy Reboot Cancelled: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Kiera Armstrong React
Hulu has decided not to move forward with the Buffy reboot, marking the end of the latest effort to revive the beloved series on Disney-owned streaming.
Reports indicated that the pilot for the project, called “Buffy: New Sunnydal,” was being developed as a new chapter in the Buffy universe. Unfortunately, despite Sarah Michelle Gellar being set to guest star and Ryan Kiera Armstrong poised to lead as a new Slayer, the show will not be coming to fruition.
In an Instagram video, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared her disappointment with fans, acknowledging the sad news and expressing gratitude for the continued love and support for the character of Buffy. Additionally, Ryan Kiera Armstrong posted her thoughts on Instagram Story, thanking the creative team and fans for their dedication to the show.
Chloé Zhao, known for her work on popular films, was on board to direct the pilot. Although the original Buffy creator, Joss Whedon, was not involved in this project, the reboot was intended to be a fresh take on the concept, focusing on a new Slayer with Gellar making occasional appearances.
Despite early excitement, Hulu ultimately chose not to proceed with the pilot, with reports stating that the project was deemed “not perfect” and that Zhao’s directorial style might not have been the best fit.
However, while this particular reboot may have been shelved, the Buffy IP is still highly valued by Hulu and Disney. There are discussions about exploring different avenues for the franchise, indicating that even though this project didn’t work out as planned, Buffy may still have a future on the streaming platform.
