Teamsters: Worker Protections Essential for DOJ to Block Paramount-Warner Merger
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters recently voiced concerns to the Department of Justice about the proposed merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery. With nearly 15,000 Motion Picture Teamsters at stake, the union is worried about the impact on film and television workers across the country. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien emphasized the potential threat to jobs and industry stability posed by this consolidation.
According to the union, previous mergers in the entertainment industry have led to job losses and production shifts away from American workers. Without clear protections for workers in the Paramount-Warner merger, the Teamsters are calling on the DOJ to step in and block the deal. Union members are concerned about the trend of corporate consolidation prioritizing profits over the well-being of workers.
The merger would bring together two major Hollywood studios and combine streaming services, further centralizing decision-making power in the industry. The Teamsters argue that this concentration of power makes it essential for the DOJ to ensure safeguards are in place to protect domestic production and labor standards.
Teamsters Motion Picture Division Director Lindsay Dougherty highlighted the importance of preserving good union jobs in the face of corporate greed. The union is urging the DOJ to prioritize worker protections in any decision regarding the merger. Without commitments to support workers and prevent layoffs, the Teamsters are calling for legal action to block the merger entirely.
Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The union is advocating for the rights of entertainment industry workers and emphasizing the need for strong labor standards in the face of corporate mergers.
