Canal+ partners with Google AI for video production and content recommendation
French media group Canal+ recently announced new partnerships with Google Cloud and OpenAI, aiming to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to enhance its streaming service and production workflows. The goal? To provide personalized recommendations to viewers and ultimately grow its subscriber base to 100 million by 2030.
According to Canal+ CEO Maxime Sadda, the collaboration with Google Cloud will focus on data extraction, while OpenAI will power search recommendations to improve the overall user experience. By indexing their entire content library, Canal+ intends to enhance the accuracy and specificity of its recommendations, going head-to-head with giants like Netflix.
One fascinating aspect of the partnership is Canal+’s plan to use Google’s video generative AI, Veo 3, to assist production teams. This tool will allow creators to visualize scenes before shooting or even recreate historical moments from archival photographs. The updated system, set to launch in June 2026, will move beyond traditional keyword searches, enabling subscribers to make natural-language requests and receive tailored suggestions generated by AI.
Saada emphasized the importance of data in this project, explaining how Google’s models can identify elements and describe scenes in movies or shows. By combining Google’s data capabilities with OpenAI’s technology, Canal+ hopes to revolutionize its search and recommendation engines.
The deployment of these advanced technologies will initially cover European and African markets where the Canal+ App is available. Canal+ assured that intellectual property protections are in place, with its rights and assets securely safeguarded within Google Cloud’s environment. Stay tuned for more exciting developments as Canal+ continues to innovate its streaming experience!
