Ayuso Claims Yellow Jersey After Lidl-Trek Takes Second at Paris-Nice TTT
Juan Ayuso is now sporting the yellow jersey at Paris-Nice after Lidl-Trek’s fantastic second-place finish in the team time trial on stage 3. The team from Germany came in just two and a half seconds behind the winners Ineos Grenadiers. Decathlon CMA CGM took third, nine seconds later.
Lidl-Trek came to The Race to the Sun prepared with a strong time trial team. Three national time trial champions, Mathias Vacek from Czechia, Jakob Söderqvist from Sweden, and Toms Skujiņš from Latvia, led the charge. Lennard Kämna, Julien Bernard, and Søren Kragh Andersen completed the team, all working hard to get Ayuso across the finish line. The race saw each rider putting in a tremendous effort, with Söderqvist and Vacek leading the final charge before Ayuso finished strong as the team’s anchor.
Although Lidl-Trek narrowly missed out on the stage win they were aiming for, there’s satisfaction in seeing Ayuso take the overall lead. With the four bonus seconds from stage 2, Ayuso now leads the race sporting the yellow jersey. The team is in a good position, but with challenging weather predicted for stage 4, including crosswinds, rain, and cold temperatures that could shake up the race, their unity will be crucial in maintaining their lead.
The impact of this result goes beyond Paris-Nice. With a team time trial planned for the beginning of this year’s Tour de France, Lidl-Trek has showcased their strength against the clock.
Juan shared his thoughts on the race, expressing a mix of disappointment for missing the stage win and pride in his team’s performance. He highlighted their dedication to training together and their strong chemistry, emphasizing the importance of pacing and teamwork.
As Ayuso looks ahead to the upcoming challenges, including tough weather conditions and the unpredictability of the race, he remains confident in his overall form and readiness to face whatever comes next.
