War Machine: A Unique Genre Mix
I wasn’t sure what to expect from Patrick Hughes’ War Machine on Netflix, but I was pleasantly surprised. The movie kicks off with a fast-paced montage introducing us to Staff Sergeant 81 (played by Alan Ritchson) and his journey to become an Army Ranger. While the film initially feels like a military recruitment ad, it takes a surprising turn as the story unfolds.
As 81 progresses through the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program, things take a dramatic turn when an alien spaceship emerges from the wreckage of a crash. Suddenly, War Machine shifts into a full-blown homage to Predator, with intense action sequences that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Despite its lack of originality, the film delivers some thrilling moments and impressive visual effects.
Alan Ritchson shines as 81, bringing depth to a character with a haunting past. The climactic showdown with the alien spaceship is a highlight, showcasing Hughes’ skills as an action filmmaker. While some scenes feel constrained by budget limitations, War Machine overall is a visually striking and engaging watch.
If you’re a fan of action-packed sci-fi films, War Machine is worth a watch. Hughes’ direction and Ritchson’s performance elevate the film above its familiar premise, setting the stage for potential future collaborations. Check it out on Netflix and see for yourself!
