“Melania Movie Heads to Streaming After Box Office Flop”
If you missed the chance to see the first lady’s documentary in theaters, don’t worry – you’ll soon be able to stream it from the comfort of your home. “Melania,” a production by Amazon and MGM directed by Brett Ratner, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime on Monday, March 9th, just six weeks after its initial debut at the Kennedy Center.
The documentary, which chronicles the first lady’s life in the 20 days before her husband’s second inauguration, hit theaters with high expectations. In its opening weekend, “Melania” exceeded box-office predictions, earning around $7 million and marking one of the highest openings for a non-musical documentary in a decade. However, given its massive budget of $75 million, it fell short of being a financial success.
Unfortunately, the film didn’t perform as well as hoped in international markets either. In the U.K., “Melania” made just over £32,000 in its opening weekend across 155 cinemas, while it was pulled from theaters in South Africa before it could even be released.
Despite an initially strong start in the U.S., “Melania” saw a rapid decline in attendance, with a 62.3% drop by its third weekend. By the fourth week, the documentary had disappeared from the box office entirely. However, Amazon remains hopeful that the film will find its audience when it hits streaming platforms.
When “Melania” debuts on Amazon Prime, the studio plans to recoup some of the costs through advertising and Prime signups. The documentary’s strong opening weekend is seen as a positive sign for its eventual streaming release.
Overall, “Melania” earned a total of $16.6 million worldwide, with international earnings contributing just $291,000 to that total. Despite its mixed reception with critics, the film is set to reach a wider audience when it becomes available for streaming on Prime Video.
