Philly high school cheer team documentary “Spirit” available for streaming
Peacock has just added an exciting docuseries, “Spirit,” which follows the journey of the George Washington High School Cheerleading team as they aimed for a national championship. The four-part series gives an inside look into the co-ed cheer team’s passionate dedication and hard work as they become the first team from the Philadelphia school district to compete at the National Cheerleaders Association High School Nationals.
Originally available only through Xfinity’s limited “Black Experience” platform, “Spirit” is now accessible to a broader audience on Peacock, offering viewers a compelling narrative about overcoming obstacles, breaking stereotypes, and competing at the national level.
Directed by local Philadelphian and La Salle University alum Matt Howley, and produced by Steph Curry’s Unanimous Media, this series admirably captures the heartwarming stories of 15 athletes and their coaches, Michele Sorkin-Socki and Veronica Hayes. It details the team’s challenging journey towards district, state, and national competitions, showcasing their resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
Though the team placed 10th overall in their national competition in January 2023, Howley shared that some of his most cherished moments were off the mat. By inviting viewers into the personal lives of the athletes, the series aims to connect audiences on a more profound level with the stories and struggles these students face, making their performances even more impactful when they take the stage.
Watching the series, you’ll get an intimate look at these remarkable kids, their passion for cheerleading, and the incredible journey they undertook to compete among the nation’s best. Experience the excitement and inspiration of “Spirit” as George Washington High School’s cheer team showcases their passion, grit, and unwavering spirit for cheerleading glory.
