Paramount+ and HBO Max to Merge as One Streaming Service
Paramount CEO David Ellison recently shared that if the merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery goes through, they plan to combine Paramount+ and HBO Max into one streaming service. This move, if successful, would bring together a whopping 200 million direct-to-consumer subscribers under one roof, giving them a competitive edge in the streaming world.
Details about pricing, the new name of the combined service, and how the content will be integrated are still up in the air. Additionally, it’s unclear whether the stand-alone brands like Showtime, Cinemax, and HBO will remain distinct within the new service.
Ellison emphasized that HBO will maintain its independence and continue creating content without much interference from Paramount. In his words, “Casey and his team do absolutely a remarkable job at HBO,” and “Our viewpoint is HBO should stay HBO… we just want them to continue doing more of it.”
The recent battle over Warner Bros. Discovery saw Netflix drop out after Paramount’s superior $111 billion offer won. The next step involves federal regulators approving the merger, a process that will likely unfold in the coming months.
