Russell Crowe’s Historical Action Film Gaining New Audience on HBO Max
When Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe first collaborated on a historical epic, they brought us the iconic “Gladiator.” A decade later, they reunited for “Robin Hood,” which unfortunately didn’t quite hit the mark with audiences. Despite its initial lukewarm reception, the film is now finding new fans on HBO Max. It’s currently trending in the top 10 on the platform, which begs the question: what’s making “Robin Hood” resonate with viewers now?
Part of the reason could be the resurgence of interest in Robin Hood stories, with other adaptations in the works. Russell Crowe himself has even recommended giving the film another chance. In a recent interaction on X, Crowe mentioned that the director’s cut of the film is closer to what they had intended to release, with 17 minutes cut from the theatrical version. While the director’s cut may not be available on HBO Max, the original film still has its merits.
Critics may have pointed out issues like Crowe’s English accent, but the film boasts impressive set pieces and a strong supporting cast, including talents like Cate Blanchett and Oscar Isaac. And with more Robin Hood adaptations on the horizon, we may see even better interpretations of the legendary archer in the near future.
In fact, two new Robin Hood projects are already in the works. MGM+ has launched a series starring Jack Patten as Robin Hood, which has been renewed for a second season. On the big screen, Hugh Jackman is set to portray an older Robin Hood in “The Death of Robin Hood,” offering a unique take on the character’s later years. The trailer promises a dark and compelling story, presenting a new angle on the Prince of Thieves. Fans can look forward to seeing Jackman’s portrayal when the film hits theaters on June 19, 2026.
