Sterling K. Brown Utilizes Social Media for Child Safety

Sterling K. Brown, known for his role in ‘Paradise,’ recently opened up about his unique perspective on social media and parenting. In a candid conversation on Dax Shepherd’s podcast, Armchair Expert, Brown shared his approach to keeping his kids safe in the era of social media. While many parents aim to shield their children from the digital world, Brown and his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe, take a different stance.

In contrast to Shepherd and Kristen Bell, who keep their children out of the public eye, Brown discussed his belief that sharing glimpses of his life online could actually enhance their safety. He emphasized the importance of providing Black children like his own sons, Amaré and Andrew, with access to opportunities that come with a certain level of visibility. Brown mentioned, “I feel like the more I put them on social, the safer they are. Any proximity that Black boys can have to some sort of celebrity or access or… status [or] leverage.”

Though he considers social media a form of protection, Brown is much more cautious when he’s out with his family. He mentioned a strict no-pictures policy when they’re spending quality time together, emphasizing their need for privacy and normalcy. Brown shared, “If I am out with Ryan and the boys, we have a policy of no pictures. And the policy is because they deserve to have a regular night out. It’s their time.”

Brown also discussed navigating the challenges of parenting a teenager, praising his son’s achievements as a student and athlete. However, he admitted to struggling with fostering open communication with his eldest son. Reflecting on their relationship dynamics, Brown expressed a mixture of understanding and concern, acknowledging his son’s need for autonomy while also yearning for deeper conversations.

As Brown continues to juggle his family life and career, his insights shed light on the complexities of modern parenting and the delicate balance between protecting children and allowing them the space to grow.
