HBO Instructs ‘The Pitt’ to Adjust ICE Storyline for Balance
When HBO’s hit show, The Pitt, decided to include an ICE storyline in an upcoming episode, they wanted to make sure it was done right. Lead producer John Wells shared that HBO’s only note was to keep the story “balanced” and ensure that all points of view were considered. This decision came as the parent company was going through a major merger, adding an extra layer of importance to the episode.
Filming for the episode started in December, shortly after Warner Bros. Discovery’s deal with Netflix was announced. Despite some initial concerns about addressing such a sensitive topic, Wells explained that the show aims to tackle real-life issues with care and thoughtfulness. The Pitt doesn’t shy away from controversial subjects, having previously covered topics like mass shootings and anti-vaccine sentiments.
In an upcoming episode, The Pitt will explore the presence of ICE in emergency rooms, inspired by a recent New York Times article. Wells emphasized the importance of presenting different viewpoints on these complex issues, as the show strives to engage viewers in meaningful conversations.
Noah Wyle, who plays the show’s senior physician and co-created The Pitt, expressed how the series has sparked important discussions among viewers. The show’s success and credibility within the medical community have been pivotal in its popularity. Fans can catch new episodes of The Pitt streaming on HBO Max every Thursday.
