Two Memorable Golden Sports Moments
American athletes made history today in Milan and Cortina, with Alysa Liu and the U.S. women’s hockey team both claiming gold medals in spectacular fashion. Liu’s flawless performance in the women’s free skate earned her the gold, becoming the first American woman to do so since 2002. The Women’s hockey team’s thrilling overtime victory against rival Canada secured their first gold since 2018.
During her captivating free skate, Liu seemed to be enjoying every moment on the ice, displaying grace and skill throughout her routine. The elation was clear on her face when she finished, exclaiming, “That’s what I’m talking about!” After finishing third in the short program, she delivered a remarkable free skate performance, clinching the top spot with a total score of 226.79. Fellow American Amber Glenn also impressed, bouncing back from a mistake in the short program to finish fifth with her season-best score.
In a nail-biting game, the U.S. women’s hockey team faced a tough challenge against Canada, trailing 1-0 for most of the match. With just over two minutes left, a goal from Hilary Knight tied the game, leading to Megan Keller’s game-winning goal in overtime. The victory marks Team USA’s third gold and a dominant 7-0 record in the tournament. Knight also made history as the all-time leading scorer for U.S. women’s hockey at the Olympics.
In speedskating, Jordan Stolz captured the silver medal in the 1,500-meter final, finishing just behind China’s Zhongyan Ning. Despite a slow start, Stolz expressed his hopes for a silver medal and now looks ahead to the speedskating mass start event.
As the quarterfinals of the men’s hockey tournament proved, the stage is set for exciting semifinal matchups. With potential clashes between USA and Canada or surprises from Finland and Slovakia, the competition promises to be intense. Stay tuned for more thrilling Olympic action ahead!
