Netflix Interested in Hiring Barry Bonds for MLB Opening Day Coverage
Netflix is setting its sights on baseball legend Barry Bonds for the upcoming MLB Opening Day coverage. The streaming service is in talks to bring Bonds on board for the historic game between the Giants and Yankees at Oracle Park in San Francisco on March 25, as reported by The Athletic.
If an agreement is reached, Bonds would likely be involved in both pregame and postgame coverage of the event. In an effort to balance out Bonds’ ties to the Giants, Netflix is also looking to recruit CC Sabathia, who has strong connections to the Yankees after playing 15 years with the team.
Elle Duncan, who recently joined Netflix to lead their sports programming, is expected to be a key presenter for the Opening Day game. Starting this year, Netflix will be airing a standalone prime-time game to kick off each season as part of a three-year deal with MLB.
In addition to the Opening Day game, Netflix has obtained exclusive rights to broadcast the Home Run Derby and the highly anticipated “Field of Dreams” game on Aug. 13 in Dyersville, Iowa, featuring the Phillies and Twins.
While Bonds has not held a national broadcasting position since retiring in 2007, he currently works as a special advisor for the Giants and previously served as the Marlins’ hitting coach in 2016. Sabathia, a recent inductee into the Hall of Fame, has been involved in various media projects post-retirement, including appearances on MLB Network and hosting the “R2C2 Podcast.”
Despite being kept out of the Baseball Hall of Fame due to steroid allegations, Bonds remains a highly respected figure in the baseball world. With Bonds and Sabathia potentially joining the broadcast team, Netflix is gearing up to deliver an exciting and unique MLB viewing experience for fans.
