A Peacock in the Rubble: Exploring OCDs at 02F

Marissa Rutka had big plans for a solo show about her experiences with OCD at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in 2024. But when the Eaton fires in L.A. destroyed her home, everything changed. Despite the tragedy, Rutka found inspiration in the aftermath of the loss, which fueled her creative process.

Now, Rutka’s piece, “A Peacock in the Rubble,” has earned her the prestigious Fierce Award for its raw honesty and powerful storytelling. The show is set to be performed on Saturday, March 14 at the Arcata Playhouse as part of the 10th annual Zero to Fierce Festival.

Rutka’s work aims to shed light on the real struggles of OCD beyond the usual stereotypes and encourages self-empathy in the face of life’s challenges. Through her thoughtful storytelling and personal journey, Rutka hopes to show audiences the importance of self-acceptance and kindness.

In the midst of rebuilding her life after the fire, Rutka found solace in the support of her friends and community. This experience taught her valuable lessons about connection and the power of human kindness. Despite the difficult subject matter of the show, Rutka believes that there is a balance between darkness and light that she hopes to convey to her audience.

The show integrates Rutka’s past experiences with mental health through home videos and reflections, inviting viewers to reflect on their own journeys. Ultimately, Rutka wants audiences to walk away with a sense of self-compassion and understanding.
