Moira Ross Launches Formats Hub for K-Popped
Canadian producer and distributor, Sphere Media, has partnered with format developer and producer Moira Ross. Together they plan to create a new hub for large-scale US and UK entertainment format co-productions. Ross will be working on developing and producing established and new IP, focusing initially on dating shows, social experiments, and premium talent competitions.
With the advantage of Canada’s tax incentives, this collaboration will allow for the delivery of large-scale studio formats more cost-effectively compared to other global production hubs. Ross has an impressive track record, having worked on major global franchises in both the US and UK. She played a key role in the revamp of Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and was involved in Dancing With the Stars in the US.
Known for revitalizing and rebranding major IP, Ross also launched the BAFTA-nominated UK version of The Voice and served as a showrunner for five seasons. Her recent credits include successful shows like K-Popped on Apple TV+ and the BAFTA-nominated Hannah Waddingham’s Home for Christmas. She has also worked on popular shows like The Masked Singer (FOX) and So You Think You Can Dance.
Ross, reflecting on her new venture, expressed excitement about the opportunity to work with Sphere for its creative culture, collaborative approach, and potential to produce content in multiple languages. Canadian producers, she notes, are facing challenges with tighter budgets and higher expectations, but she sees potential in Canada as a hub for global partnerships, given its budget competitiveness and cultural alignment advantages.
The CEO of Sphere Media, Bruno Dubé, praised Ross for her creative leadership and extensive experience in global formats. The partnership aims to unlock new creative and commercial opportunities with US and UK partners while solidifying Canada’s position as a hub for premium entertainment formats. Collaborating with Sphere’s talented creators and producers, including Kim Bondi, Marie-Pier Gaudreault, and Renaud Chassé, they aim to create ambitious content for the global market.
