HBO Max acquires historical drama “Carlota” from Sony Pictures Television

HBO Max is gearing up for an exciting addition to its lineup with the acquisition of Sony Pictures Television’s upcoming historical drama series, Carlota. The series, which is currently in production in Spain, made its debut at the 2025 LA Screenings and will soon be available exclusively on HBO Max, with SPT taking care of distribution.

Set in Mexico during a time of war and political upheaval, Carlota follows the true story of Carlota de Habsburgo, the first empress of Mexico. The show delves into the lives of Carlota and Maximilian, two European aristocrats with progressive views who find themselves at odds with a power-hungry establishment.

Described as a mix of humor, boldness, and creative freedom, Carlota explores themes of power, desire, betrayal, and politics through a modern lens. The series aims to challenge conventional historical narratives and shed light on the human toll of empire-building.

Created by Carlos Quintanilla Sakar and Adriana Pelusi, with direction from Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos and Alejandro Bazzano, Carlota stars Belinda Peregrín Schüll as Carlota and Jaime Lorente as Maximilian, supported by Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Mabel Cadena. The show’s executive production team includes Alejandro García, Quintanilla Sakar, and Madeleine Contreras.

Filming for Carlota will take place in various locations across Spain and Latin America, promising viewers a visually stunning backdrop to this gripping historical drama. Keep an eye out for this captivating series coming soon to HBO Max!
