Intense NHL Rivalry Drives Ticket Sales to New Heights

HBO Max’s popular gay ice hockey drama, “Heated Rivalry,” has not only captured the hearts of viewers but also ignited a surge in interest in the sport itself. The National Hockey League (NHL) has reported a significant increase in weekly ticket sales, rising more than 20% since the show’s debut. This boost in demand marks a noticeable change from the same period last year when there was no such spike in ticket sales.

According to SeatGeek, a mobile ticketing platform, the games have not only seen an increase in single-ticket sales but also a rise in attendance by first-time game-goers. This newfound interest has led to a sharp increase in revenue for the NHL, which has soared by more than 30%.

Chris Leyden, the marketing director at SeatGeek, highlighted the impact of “Heated Rivalry” on hockey and the NHL, stating, “We are seeing more people searching for NHL tickets on SeatGeek and a notable rise in single-ticket buyers, many of whom are attending a game for the first time.”

StubHub also reported a 75% increase in ticket searches, with 5% of tickets purchased by first-time attendees. The last time a spike of this magnitude occurred was in 2023 when Taylor Swift attended a Chiefs’ game.

Based on Rachel Reid’s book series “Game Changers,” the show centers around the romance between two male professional hockey stars from rival teams. The series has catapulted its leading stars like Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, and Francois Arnaud to fame, sparking lively discussions among its predominantly female fanbase. “Heated Rivalry” even secured the top spot on HBO Max’s charts for several weeks, until it was eventually surpassed by the second season premiere of “The Pitt.”

The impact of “Heated Rivalry” on NHL ticket sales demonstrates the power of compelling storytelling in driving interest in a sport and engaging new audiences.
