TV: Netflix Licensing Spree Decoded, WBD Cable Strategy
Netflix is on a licensing spree, adding 20 shows to its library from Paramount, including a Taylor Sheridan original. While the full list of titles hasn’t been released yet, the deal includes CBS dramas like Matlock and Watson, as well as titles like Mayor of Kingstown and SEAL Team. No one is spilling the beans on when these shows will hit the platform, how long they’ll stick around, or if any will be exclusive.
What makes this move interesting is the timing—it’s happening as Netflix is also battling for rights to Warner Bros. Discovery’s library. Plus, the inclusion of a Sheridan show is noteworthy, especially since Kingstown is the lowest-rated series in the Sheridan lineup. On top of that, Watson, one of CBS’ scripted originals, was left out of the network’s early renewal list due to low ratings.
So, what’s Netflix’s strategy here? While we may not have all the answers, these licensing deals are definitely pieces to a larger puzzle that sheds light on how the industry is operating in 2026. It’s fascinating to watch these puzzle pieces fall into place as the streaming landscape continues to evolve.
