Renée Fleming Announces Departure from Kennedy Center Performances

Renée Fleming, the Grammy-winning soprano, has unfortunately had to cancel her two scheduled May performances at the Kennedy Center. This decision comes amidst a series of cancellations following the recent leadership changes and the announcement of renaming the venue to the Trump Kennedy Center.

Originally slated to perform with conductor James Gaffigan and the National Symphony Orchestra, Fleming’s withdrawal is not unexpected. Having resigned from her role as “Artistic Advisor at Large” a year ago in response to the departures of Kennedy Center Chair David Rubenstein and President Deborah Rutter, she cited a scheduling conflict for pulling out of the May concerts.

The Kennedy Center has assured patrons that new soloists and repertoire will be announced at a later date, and the rest of the program will proceed as planned. Despite multiple attempts, Fleming has not yet commented on her cancellation.

Renowned artists like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bela Fleck, and Issa Rae have also cancelled events at the Kennedy Center, in line with President Trump’s criticism of what he deems “woke” culture. Just recently, the Washington National Opera announced its decision to sever ties with the Kennedy Center after a partnership of over 50 years.
