Trump Buys Millions in Netflix, WBD Bonds After Dec. 5 Merger Announcement
President Donald Trump recently made headlines when it was revealed that he purchased millions of dollars’ worth of bonds in streaming giants Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. These purchases came almost ten days after the announcement of the two companies’ $72 billion merger. On December 16, the White House disclosed the bond purchases, which were part of approximately $100 million in transactions, with each company receiving about $502,000.
According to Reuters, a White House official clarified that Trump’s stock and bond portfolio is managed independently by third-party financial institutions, with Trump and his family members not directly involved in the investment decisions. Bonds are different from stocks, as they represent a loan to the company with a promise to repay borrowed money alongside a fixed amount of interest.
Trump’s interest in these companies may be related to his statements about taking an active role in the regulatory process concerning Netflix or its competitor Paramount Skydance’s bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Although the merger does not involve the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) due to Netflix not acquiring Warner’s broadcast TV assets, including CNN and Turner, it could raise antitrust concerns that would need to be addressed by the Justice Department.
In December, Trump expressed reservations about the size of Netflix’s market share, especially with the addition of Warner Bros. content. Netflix held the fifth position in U.S. media rankings in November, with 8.3% of the total household TV media share, trailing behind Paramount, Disney, YouTube, and NBCUniversal, according to Nielsen data.
Trump’s interest in the merger extends to consulting with economic advisors before making any decisions. Notably, he had met with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos in November and spoke positively about him, emphasizing the need to consider market share implications carefully.
As discussions and negotiations unfold regarding the merger, it will be interesting to see how Trump’s involvement and potential conflict of interest as an investor in these companies play out. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
