Review: The Rip on Netflix – Can a Star-Studded Cast Save This Mediocre Show?

I usually steer clear of crime movies for one simple reason—they tend to be a bit dull and predictable. The same old serious and uninspired tone can lead to a major boredom rut for me, as they often end up following the same worn-out path. But Netflix’s latest release, “The Rip,” got my attention with its big-name cast and high production value, so I decided to give it a shot and see if it could change my mind about the genre.

The film, which hit Netflix on January 16th, boasts a star-studded lineup that includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Teyana Taylor, and Steven Yeun. While these talented actors do their best to breathe life into a rather straightforward film, their efforts get lost in a sea of familiar crime tropes.

Despite sticking to the usual formula of crime thrillers with its classic twist ending and random emotional subplots that sometimes miss the mark, “The Rip” managed to hold my interest. The story follows a team of detectives who stumble upon a massive stash of cash in a raid gone wrong, leading to a suspenseful race against time to count the money before a mysterious threat executes them all.

As suspicions rise and trust among the cops is put to the test, the true mastermind behind the scheme is revealed. Lieutenant Dane Dumars, played by Damon, initially falls under suspicion due to his personal struggles and tragic backstory. While this backstory could easily veer into cliché territory, it actually adds depth to the character and the overall story, a refreshing change from the usual crime thriller conventions.

Overall, while “The Rip” may not reinvent the wheel when it comes to crime dramas, it offers a compelling storyline and some standout performances from its talented cast. So if you’re a fan of the genre, it’s definitely worth adding to your Netflix watchlist.
