Sony Movies Expand Worldwide Deal with Netflix to Remain Streaming Home
Netflix has secured a new deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to be the exclusive global streaming home for Sony movies. The agreement covers rights to Sony films after they complete their theatrical and home entertainment runs. This deal builds on Netflix’s existing Pay-1 rights in the United States, Germany, and Southeast Asia.
The full agreement won’t take effect until early 2029, but Netflix will start streaming Sony movies in individual territories later in 2026 as rights become available. As part of this expanded partnership, Netflix will also have access to select Sony Pictures Entertainment feature films and TV shows.
The financial specifics of the deal have not been disclosed, but industry sources estimate it to be valued at over $7 billion, making it one of the largest-ever Pay-1 agreements. This new deal expands on the original five-year domestic rights deal between Netflix and Sony, which was valued at $2.5 billion.
Lauren Smith, Netflix’s VP of licensing and programming strategy, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting Sony’s popular film franchises like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and original titles like “Anyone but You.” This deal aims to offer Netflix subscribers worldwide exclusive access to Sony’s beloved films, enriching their overall streaming experience.
