Netflix Orders ‘I Suck at Girls’ Comedy Series From ‘Abbott Elementary’ Duo

Netflix is bringing Justin Halpern’s 2012 memoir “I Suck at Girls” to the screen in a new comedy series. The show will be penned by Halpert and Patrick Schumacker, who are also co-showrunners on “Abbott Elementary” with Quinta Brunson. Bill Lawrence, known for “Shrinking” and “Scrubs,” is on board as executive producer through his Doozer banner, along with Warner Bros. TV.

Reports say that Netflix’s order for the series is contingent on casting, meaning the project could change depending on the actors attached.

“I Suck at Girls” will follow the journey of three high school sophomores as they navigate teenage romances, adolescence, and identity struggles. Based on Halpern’s own romantic adventures, the series will delve into his experiences with childhood crushes and losing his virginity.

Halpern, Schumacker, and Lawrence will executive produce the show through Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions, along with Chet Dave, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer.

Initially, Halpern and Schumacker developed “I Suck at Girls” as a pilot for Fox back in 2013 under the working title “Surviving Jack.” The show was envisioned as a single-camera ensemble comedy set in 1990s Southern California, starring Christopher Meloni as a father navigating his son’s journey to adulthood in an era before everything could be Googled.

The project is close to Lawrence’s heart because “Surviving Jack” was a product of Doozer Productions in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television. Halpern and Schumacker were renowned for their adaptation of Halpern’s Twitter feed in “$#! My Dad Says.” The pilot for the Fox version was directed by Victor Nelli, with a stellar lineup of executive producers including Lawrence and Scrubs fame and Jeff Ingold.
