Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Release Date, Trailer, Cast, and More

The Star Trek universe is expanding at warp speed with the new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Set in the 32nd century, the show follows the first Starfleet Academy class in 120 years as they train to become officers. The series promises a mix of friendship, rivalry, romance, and a looming threat to the Academy and the Federation itself.

Co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau have described the show as a blend of classic “coming of age” stories with a Star Trek twist. The young cadets are tasked with rebuilding the values of Star Trek and convey messages of hope in these challenging times. The aim is to show viewers the appeal of Starfleet Academy and make them want to be a part of it.

The official trailer for Starfleet Academy debuted at New York Comic Con, giving fans a glimpse of the characters and the rigorous training they undergo. The cast includes Holly Hunter as the chancellor of the Academy, along with a fresh lineup of young talents taking on the roles of cadets. Stars like Tatiana Maslany, Gina Yashere, and Paul Giamatti also make appearances in guest roles, with classic Star Trek characters like Admiral Vance and Sylvia Tilly returning.

Paul Giamatti appears as the series’ villain, bringing a unique twist to the story with his character, Nus Braka. Klingons, including a hybrid species, will also play a role in the series. The first two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premiere on Thursday, Jan. 15, with new episodes releasing weekly on Paramount+.
