Matthew McConaughey Talks About Mom Kay Celebrating 94th Birthday

Matthew McConaughey recently took to Instagram to celebrate his mom Kay’s 94th birthday. In a heartwarming photo, Kay is shown laughing alongside her son Matthew and grandson Levi. The actor-producer captioned the post, “proof that 94 years of joy ages well.” Known affectionately as “MaMac” within the family, Kay has always been close to her son and grandchildren. Matthew and his wife Camila share three children – Levi, Vida, and Livingston. Sadly, Kay’s husband James passed away in 1992 at the age of 62.

The McConaughey family frequently shares glimpses of their life together in Texas. In 2020, when Kay turned 90, Matthew posted a picture of her wearing a birthday sash, highlighting her outlook on life, filled with joy, forgiveness, and resistance.

In a candid interview with PEOPLE, Matthew and Kay revealed that they haven’t always been as close as they are now. Kay shared that there was a period of eight years where she publicly shared personal information about her son, causing a strain on their relationship. However, as Matthew became more stable in his career and fame, he became more accepting of his mom’s outspoken nature.

Every time Matthew completes a film, Kay never fails to offer praise, saying, “‘Oh, so good! I see where you get it from.’” This tradition has now been passed down to his son Levi.
