Share Your Real-Time Streaming Activity with Friends on Spotify
Spotify is rolling out new social features to keep users engaged and connecting within the app. This includes a new Messages feature that allows users to see what their friends are streaming in real time and send requests to start Jams, which is Spotify’s collaborative listening feature.
To make use of these features, users need to go to their Settings and turn on the “listening activity” feature in the “Privacy & Social” section. Once activated, the listening activity will show up at the top of Messages chats. From there, users can play the track, save it, open the menu, or react with an emoji to their friend’s listening activity.
Premium users can also start a Jam by tapping the “Jam” option in the top right corner to send a request to their friends. If accepted, both users can add tracks to a shared queue and listen to music together.
These features will be available on the iOS and Android apps where Messages is available and will be widely accessible in these markets by early February. Listening Activity is open to all users with access to Messages, while Free users can join a Request to Jam session when invited by a Premium user.
Spotify emphasizes that the new features are only available to users 16 and older via Messages. The company launched Messages in August 2025 to make the app more social, encouraging users to interact within the platform itself.
Currently, Messages on Spotify can only be sent to individual users, with whom users have shared content like playlists or participated in Jams. Messages are encrypted at rest and in transit, but they do not have end-to-end encryption for added security.
Overall, these new social features aim to enhance the user experience and keep users connected within the app, showcasing Spotify’s commitment to fostering a more interactive and engaging music streaming platform.
