Premier League: Man United vs Newcastle on Boxing Day

Boxing Day and the English Premier League are like peanut butter and jelly – they just go together. This year, the big game on Boxing Day will be Manchester United taking on Newcastle United. Now, usually, Boxing Day in England is jam-packed with soccer matches, but this year, it’s just this one game on the schedule. Last year, there were eight matches on Boxing Day, so it’s definitely a change of pace.

Why the light lineup this year? Well, Boxing Day falls on a Friday, with most games happening on the weekend. The last time this happened in 2014, there were a bunch of matches. The Premier League has explained that the decrease in games is due to a crowded schedule caused by the expansion of European club competitions.

In a statement, the Premier League recognized the situation, saying, “There are now several challenges to Premier League fixture scheduling rooted in the expansion of European club competitions – which led to a revision of our domestic calendar ahead of last season, including changes to the FA Cup.” So, with fewer weekends available for matches, the League is doing the best it can with the calendar it’s got. But, good news for next year – when Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, there will be more Premier League games!

So, mark your calendar for Manchester United versus Newcastle United on Boxing Day. It might be just one game, but it’s sure to be a good one!
