Will Prime Video Remove Ads Following Legal Issue?

In 2024, Amazon made a big change to its Prime Video service by introducing ads for the first time, which upset some of its users. The ads came with a €2.99 monthly fee to opt-out of them. However, a legal issue arose in Germany when the Munich Regional Court ruled that Amazon didn’t get proper consent from users before making this change.

The court said that adding ads took away from the core feature of an ad-free experience, which was a key part of the Prime Video service. They also found fault with Amazon’s email to customers, saying it was misleading because it didn’t clearly explain the changes.

While Amazon isn’t required to get rid of the ads right away, they must improve their communication and let users know what’s going on. Amazon isn’t happy with the ruling and may appeal it.

This legal hiccup in Germany may raise questions about how Prime Video operates in other countries, including India. We’ll have to wait and see if this issue leads Amazon to reconsider their approach to ads on the platform.
