Panthers uncertain if Tkachuk will participate in Winter Classic

MIAMI – The big question on everyone’s mind is whether Matthew Tkachuk will hit the ice for the Florida Panthers in the upcoming 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic. When asked about it, Florida general manager Bill Zito simply replied, “I don’t know,” on Wednesday.

Tkachuk has been sidelined this season due to a lower-body injury but is making progress towards his expected return date. Although he’s back on the ice, he hasn’t rejoined the team just yet. With six games left before the Winter Classic matchup against the New York Rangers at loanDepot park on Jan. 2, the speculation continues.

“The prognosis remains the same as it was at the start of the season,” Zito shared from the stadium during the event prep. “They told me around Christmas, so I don’t know what that means. He’ll play when he’s ready.”

Tkachuk is a pivotal player for the Panthers, the reigning two-time Stanley Cup champions, as they gear up for their first-ever outdoor game that happens to be the first of its kind in Florida. In the previous season, he clocked in impressive stats of 57 points (22 goals, 35 assists) in 52 regular-season games and shined with 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in 23 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Sharing his enthusiasm for the Winter Classic, Tkachuk reminisces about attending the event back on Jan. 1, 2010, which featured the Boston Bruins clinching a victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime at Fenway Park. He vividly recalls the freezing 35-degree Fahrenheit weather at face-off, reminiscing about having hand warmers under their gloves.

Despite not being sure if he’ll be hitting the ice for the upcoming game, Tkachuk emphasizes the significance of the Winter Classic experience for his team and the sport in Florida. The thrill and anticipation are palpable as the event draws near, promising an unforgettable moment for hockey fans.
