Netflix Faces Class Action Lawsuit Regarding Warner Bros. Deal
Netflix is currently facing a class-action lawsuit over its recent deal with Warner Bros, with Netflix being accused of reducing competition in the streaming services industry. Michelle Fendelander, a subscriber to Warner Bros-owned HBO, filed the lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that the potential deal threatens to limit competition in the U.S. subscription video-on-demand market.
In response to the lawsuit, Netflix has called it “meritless.” The streaming giant announced the deal with Warner Bros on Dec. 5, stating that merging the two companies will offer viewers a wide range of viewing options to choose from.
The lawsuit, which was filed on Dec. 8, alleges that the deal between Netflix and Warner Bros would give Netflix control over popular Warner Bros franchises like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and DC Comics. Fendelander is requesting the court to issue an injunction to prevent the merger from happening to avoid anti-competitive effects in the streaming market.
Netflix has defended itself against the lawsuit, stating that they believe the suit is without merit and is simply an attempt by the plaintiffs’ bar to capitalize on the attention surrounding the deal.
By merging with Warner Bros, Netflix aims to provide consumers with more viewing options by combining their own library with that of Warner Bros, including popular titles like “The Big Bang Theory,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Wizard of Oz.” However, Netflix has not disclosed any official plans on how this merger will affect HBO Max subscribers.
Overall, the outcome of the lawsuit and the impact of the Netflix-Warner Bros deal on viewers, particularly HBO Max subscribers, remains to be seen as the legal battle unfolds.
