“47 Ronin Director Guilty of Defrauding Netflix for $11 Million”

A recent report from Business Insider has uncovered some shocking news about Carl Rinsch, the director behind the 2013 film “47 Ronin.” It turns out that Rinsch has been found guilty of defrauding Netflix out of a whopping $11 million, and he could potentially face up to 90 years behind bars.

The whole debacle started back in 2017 when Rinsch began working on a project called “White Horse,” later renamed “Conquest.” The show’s premise revolved around a scientist creating a humanoid species that ultimately turns against its creators. Rinsch funded and completed six short-form episodes using his own money and investments from others. He then used these episodes to pitch the show to various studios, ultimately striking a deal with Netflix for over $61 million.

Fast forward to 2020, Rinsch had already spent $44 million of Netflix’s money on the series when he requested an additional $11 million to finish the season. Surprisingly, Netflix agreed to his request. However, instead of using this new investment to complete the show as promised, Rinsch transferred the funds to personal accounts. He then made some risky stock trades and spent the remaining money on cryptocurrency.

In a strange turn of events, Rinsch did manage to turn a profit on the cryptocurrency trades. But rather than using this newfound money to salvage the project, he went on a lavish $10 million spending spree. This spree included purchases like furniture, luxury cars, mattresses, and high-end fashion items.

Unfortunately, the series was never finished, and by 2021, Netflix had canceled the project, writing off over $55 million in costs. Rinsch faced charges of wire fraud, money laundering, and engaging in monetary transactions from unlawful activity. After a swift trial, he was found guilty on all charges. While he could potentially face decades in prison, it is expected that his sentence will be significantly shorter.

This cautionary tale serves as a reminder to always act with integrity, whether in business or creative endeavors. It’s a shame to see such potential squandered due to greed and deception. Let’s hope that justice is served and that lessons are learned from this unfortunate situation.
