IBM has made a big move in the tech world by acquiring Confluent, a data streaming platform, in a whopping $11 billion deal. This purchase is a key part of IBM’s strategy to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities. The agreement includes IBM buying all of Confluent’s outstanding stock for $31 per share in cash, totaling the enterprise value at $11 billion.
Confluent, headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is known for its open-source data streaming platform that handles data and events in real-time. The platform specializes in getting data ready for AI and ensuring it stays organized across different systems and applications.
With this acquisition, IBM aims to help its client companies deploy AI services more efficiently and quickly by enabling seamless communication and data flow between various environments, applications, and APIs. According to IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, data is widely dispersed across public and private clouds, data centers, and various tech providers, making it vital to have trusted connectivity.
The deal is set to be finalized in mid-2026 pending approval from Confluent shareholders and regulatory clearance. Following the announcement, Confluent’s shares saw a significant increase of 29% in premarket trading, while IBM’s stock experienced a minimal decrease of less than 1%.
