Netflix Chief Ted Sarandos Secures White House Meeting Before Warner Bros. Deal
Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix, recently met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in the days leading up to Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. and HBO Max for $82.7 billion. The meeting, which lasted over an hour, covered topics like federal film tax incentives, but much of the discussion revolved around Netflix’s bid for Warner Bros. and HBO Max. While a spokesperson for Netflix declined to comment on the specifics of the meeting, Bloomberg reported that Sarandos left with the impression that Netflix wouldn’t face immediate opposition from the White House regarding the deal.
Critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have already raised antitrust concerns about the acquisition, even though regulatory approval is still needed for the purchase to go through. On the creative front, some members of the entertainment community, such as Sean Baker and Jane Fonda, have expressed reservations about the deal. Still, other A-list filmmakers and producers are considering releasing an open letter opposing the sale, fearing that Netflix’s takeover of Warner Bros. could impact the financial viability of theaters. Despite these concerns, many of these artists also collaborate with Netflix and are mindful of potential repercussions. By garnering enough support for the open letter, they hope to collectively address their apprehensions and ensure a unified voice.
