Netflix acquires Warner Bros. in $82.7 billion deal
Netflix announced on Friday that it’s buying Warner Bros. in a massive $82.7 billion deal, bringing the top streaming service together with a legendary studio known for classics like “Casablanca” and the “Harry Potter” series. This merger is set to happen once Warner Bros. Discovery spins off its television networks division, Discovery Global, likely in the third quarter of 2026.
According to Netflix, the acquisition will cost them $27.75 per share, totaling the deal at $82.7 billion. They anticipate the agreement to wrap up within the next 12 to 18 months. This move comes after Warner Bros. Discovery announced its split in June, separating its cable networks from its streaming and studios business.
Experts see this acquisition as a strategic power play for Netflix. By gaining control of Warner Bros.’ legacy of films and TV shows, Netflix can strengthen its content library and position in the streaming industry. The company aims to attract more subscribers, boost revenue, and solidify its market dominance.
Analysts also anticipate that combining the two companies will streamline operations and enhance the user experience, potentially creating a single flagship app or a bundled Netflix-HBO Max offering. However, regulatory challenges could arise as Netflix navigates this significant acquisition.
In a call with investors, Netflix’s co-CEO Greg Peters expressed confidence in the merger’s long-term success, emphasizing Netflix’s unique understanding of the entertainment market. This deal, which essentially unites two streaming giants, has the potential to reshape the entertainment landscape.
