Jodie Foster on Acting: A Chosen but Cruel Job

Jodie Foster recently shared her thoughts on her career as an actor, describing it as a “cruel job” that was not a choice she made for herself. At the Marrakech film festival, she reflected on how acting was thrust upon her at a young age, saying, “I would never have chosen to be an actor, I don’t have the personality of an actor.”

Having started her acting journey at just three years old, Foster explained that acting was not something she was naturally drawn to. Despite her early start in the industry, she revealed that she is not one to seek out the spotlight or perform for others. Reflecting on her extensive career, Foster emphasized that acting was not a passion of hers, stating, “If I was on a desert island, I think probably the last thing I would ever do is act. So I was just trying to survive.”

Foster’s acting career began with a television commercial at the age of three, leading to more opportunities in advertising and eventually in feature films like “Napoleon and Samantha” at six years old. Her breakthrough role came in 1976 when she portrayed a child prostitute in Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” at the age of 12, earning her first Oscar nomination.

Despite her success in the industry, Foster expressed concerns about young actors today, noting the challenges they face in maintaining a balance between work and personal life. Reflecting on her own experiences, she acknowledged the importance of having a clear distinction between public and private life to navigate the demands of the industry.

While she still enjoys acting, Foster admitted to being selective about her projects and emphasized that she values storytelling above all else. She expressed a lack of interest in pursuing roles for the sake of acting and highlighted the importance of being a vessel for meaningful stories in cinema.

Currently at the Marrakech film festival for her latest film, “A Private Life,” Foster plays a therapist who becomes entangled in a mystery surrounding a patient’s death. Reflecting on her past work, including her time on “Taxi Driver,” she praised her co-star Robert De Niro for his guidance and support during their shared scenes, highlighting the collaborative nature of their work together.
