Small Business Saturday Success in Detroit Despite Economic Concerns and Tariffs
Small Business Saturday made a splash in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood over the weekend, with some businesses seeing steady foot traffic while others struggled to attract customers. In the bustling Fisher Building lobby, The Peacock Room drew in shoppers eager to browse its selection of female apparel, while nearby Detroit Handmades Shop saw fewer visitors.
Yulanda Burgess, a vendor selling hand-knitted apparel, expressed the challenges she faced this year and announced that this event would be her last Small Business Saturday. Despite some businesses thriving, concerns about the economy and tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump cast a shadow over the event.
This year’s tariffs have resulted in a significant increase in gross customs duties, impacting both small business owners and consumers. Rachel Lutz, owner of The Peacock Room, shared how the tariffs have affected her business, leading to higher material costs and supply chain disruptions. Despite the challenges, Lutz remains optimistic by finding new vendors and updating her collection.
However, not all businesses fared as well. Susan Brice, owner of Urbanum Detroit, mentioned how the tariffs increased prices on orders, making it challenging to sustain her business. The impact of the tariffs has been mixed, with some businesses finding alternative solutions to sourcing materials.
Small Business Saturday serves as a critical opportunity for small companies like The Peacock Room to generate significant sales. By supporting local businesses, customers like Brigid Beaubien and Martie Manning underscore the importance of building connections within the community and ensuring the survival of these independent ventures.
As the business landscape continues to evolve, small business owners remain resilient in navigating economic challenges. Finding ways to adapt and overcome obstacles is essential as they work to sustain and grow their enterprises in the face of external factors like tariffs and economic uncertainties.
