Barbershop Series on Prime Video adds Brett Grey, E.J. Bonilla, Roy Wood Jr., and Punkie Johnson
The upcoming Barbershop series on Prime Video has just announced its latest cast members, adding Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., Brett Gray, and E.J. Bonilla to join series lead Jermaine Fowler. While we don’t have all the character details yet, we know Gray will play Kofi, Johnson will play Stella, Wood will play Robert, and Bonilla will play Fernan, according to Variety.
The series, which is based on the popular film franchise, was first announced to be in development in May. Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the first Barbershop film, is writing and executive producing the series. Max Searle is the co-showrunner and executive producer, and the project is being backed by Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat, Prominent Productions, State Street Pictures, and Amazon MGM Studios.
Interested in the plot of the new Barbershop series? Here’s the official description: It follows Travis “Trav” Porter, played by Fowler, as he strives to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, a legendary barber at the iconic “Calvin’s” barbershop in Chicago. The barbers may be new, but the shop is as vibrant as ever, the customers as argumentative as always, and the fades as sharp as they come. At Calvin’s, the community gathers for more than just a haircut.
Looking back on the previous Barbershop films and series, the first Barbershop film, directed by Tim Story, hit screens in 2002 and starred Ice Cube, Anthony Anderson, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve, and more. This was followed by Barbershop 2: Back in Business in 2004 and Barbershop: The Next Cut in 2016, which brought back much of the original cast and introduced new faces like Regina Hall, Common, and Nicki Minaj.
In addition to the main films, there was a spinoff film called Beauty Shop in 2005 and a Barbershop TV series on Showtime in 2005, led by actors Omar Gooding and Gbenga Akinnagbe. It’s exciting to see the Barbershop universe expanding once again with this new series, and fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to!
