Community Leaders Advocate for Preservation of Goldsboro’s Historic Union Station
Efforts to preserve Goldsboro’s iconic Union Station are picking up speed as community leaders work to save the historic landmark. Doug McGrath and Johnny Peacock, part of the project committee, emphasize the importance of preserving the depot’s history while looking ahead to its future.
Built in 1909, Union Station played a crucial role in transforming Goldsboro. McGrath highlights its significant historical value and the urgent need for restoration due to its deteriorating condition. The goal is to ensure the building is structurally sound for whatever purpose it may serve in the future.
Originally a bustling passenger rail hub, Union Station could soon see a revival. The NCDOT Rail Division is working on reintroducing passenger rail service between Wilmington and Raleigh, with Goldsboro as a key stop. This development could bring economic benefits, improve commuting options, and boost freight capacity, benefiting local businesses and the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
Peacock, who has a personal connection to Union Station, emphasizes the deep-rooted human history within the building. Stories of wartime departures during WWII, visits from sports legend Babe Ruth, and emotional family farewells add layers to its historical significance.
The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation (DGDC) has launched a stabilization plan to raise $1.5 million for Union Station’s preservation. With overwhelming community support, they are only $53,000 away from reaching their goal. Donations can be made online through the DGDC website or the Saving Union Station campaign, with all contributions being tax-deductible.
To showcase the building and help residents understand its importance, public tours of Union Station will be available starting on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Visitors can explore the station’s Mission Eclectic style, hear captivating historical narratives, and view the original architectural features. The tours aim to bond the community with the station’s heritage and significance.
For more information on tours and how to donate, visit the DGDC’s website. Let’s come together to preserve this landmark and honor the history of Goldsboro’s Union Station.
