Spike Lee questions Trump’s swift change in opinion on Zohran Mamdani

President Donald Trump surprised many by warmly receiving New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani during their first meeting, leaving director Spike Lee scratching his head. Despite previous clashes between the two, Trump, 79, and Mamdani, 34, met in the Oval Office with smiles and friendly conversation about Mamdani’s plans for the city. This sudden change of tone from Trump, who had labeled Mamdani a “communist” and criticized him during the mayoral election, left Lee puzzled. He commented on the quick turnaround, noting Trump’s threats to cut off federal funding and questioning the shift in attitude.

Lee speculated on whether this amiable interaction would last, emphasizing the contrast between Trump’s past criticisms of Mamdani and their newfound common ground. After a productive closed-door meeting, the two posed for press photos, with Trump jokingly encouraging Mamdani to simply say “yes” in response to previous comments calling Trump a “fascist.” Despite Trump’s history of turning on political allies, such as the recent fallout with Marjorie Taylor Greene, he maintained a friendly demeanor with Mamdani during their meeting.

Lee, who attended the Torino Film Festival with his wife and received a lifetime achievement award, expressed his bafflement at the unexpected friendship between Mamdani and Trump. As for Mamdani, despite their past differences, he seemed optimistic about the future relationship between himself and the president. Only time will tell if this newfound camaraderie will stand the test of time.
