Fishers resident competes on popular Netflix show Squid Game

Fishers resident Chris Herrera had a surprising adventure when he landed a spot on Netflix’s “Squid Game: The Challenge.” Despite forgetting he even applied, he quickly rose to the top 10 contestants. This reality competition, based on the hit South Korean drama “Squid Game,” pits 456 players against each other for a chance to win a massive $4.56 million cash prize. Through a series of intense challenges, participants are gradually eliminated until only one emerges victorious.

Chris, a building supervisor at Fishers YMCA and originally from The Bronx in New York City, relocated to Fishers with his family four years ago. His journey to the show began when he decided to apply after watching the dramatic season finale of the original series. “I was with my wife, and she said, ‘Would you ever apply?’ I thought, ‘Yes, I could definitely win this whole thing,’ so I decided to go for it. I filled out the application, sent in a video, and then honestly forgot about it,” Chris recounted.

Six months later, Chris received an unexpected call from a producer of the show, sparking the beginning of his thrilling experience. They discussed his background, upbringing in the Bronx, and his time serving in the U.S. Army. Securing his spot on the show meant keeping it all under wraps, with only his wife in the know. “We couldn’t tell our family members where we were going. Everything was shrouded in secrecy,” Chris recalled.

During filming, Chris operated under the alias Player 318, completely immersed in the mysterious, high-stakes environment. The lack of clock time or daylight information added to the intense atmosphere. Chris emphasized the importance of building trust and relationships with other players, recognizing that alliances and teamwork are crucial to making it to the top. “Everyone knows only one person can win, but forming bonds with others is key to success,” he explained.

Now that Chris has returned to everyday life, he’s excited to share the valuable lessons he learned from his time on the show with his community. His experience has inspired him to reach out to new people, understand their stories, and contribute to building a stronger, more connected community. If you’re eager for more gripping entertainment, Season 2 of “Squid Game: The Challenge” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
