Resilience Lessons 20 Years Post Hurricane Katrina: What We’ve Learned
Twenty years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the congregation where Rev. Jean Marie Peacock served as an associate pastor, she shared her insights on resilience at the Stewardship Kaleidoscope. Despite losing two parishioners and 90% of the congregation losing their homes, including Peacock and her husband, she emphasized that resilience is not about “getting over” a tragedy but about drawing on community, justice, faith, and hope to thrive.
In her inspiring talk, Peacock highlighted the importance of community support during times of need and suffering. She shared a poignant moment when a church member questioned how they would rebuild their church and homes, to which she responded, “We are not alone.” She emphasized the power of being part of a connectional church that would help them overcome the challenges they faced.
Peacock also touched on the critical role of justice in promoting resilience. Reflecting on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she pointed out that the poorest of the poor are often the most vulnerable in disasters. Despite providing emergency aid, Peacock founded Project Homecoming, a ministry aimed at addressing the root causes of vulnerability through rebuilding homes and fostering workforce development.
Discussing faith as a pillar of resilience, Peacock shared her personal routine of starting the day with prayer and reflection to find strength and guidance. She recounted the story of Brenda, a survivor of Hurricane Katrina who found hope and healing through Project Homecoming after losing her home and facing financial fraud. Peacock emphasized that resilience is rooted in faith that acknowledges both lament and hope.
Finally, Peacock underscored the importance of hope in guiding resilient actions. She encouraged gratitude and a recognition of God’s presence even amid chaos and destruction. Reflecting on the powerful message of a surviving needlepoint in her ruined home that read, “Bless This Home,” Peacock reminded the audience of God’s grace and love that can uplift and renew even in the darkest times.
As Peacock concluded her talk, she urged everyone to persevere as stewards of community, justice, faith, and hope, emphasizing that true resilience comes not from personal strength but from God’s enduring love and transformative power. Her message resonated with attendees, inspiring them to embrace resilience as a gift from God that allows them not only to survive but to thrive in the face of life’s challenges.
