The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Movie Review: Creepy Thriller

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle has been given a modern update in a 2025 remake, now available for streaming on Hulu. Starring Maika Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, this version offers some decent performances from the leads, but falls short of truly standing out.

The story follows Polly Murphy (Monroe), who reaches out to Caitlin Morales (Winstead), a stressed and pregnant attorney, seeking a nanny job for Caitlin and her husband, Miguel (Raúl Castillo). As Polly becomes more involved in their lives, tensions arise between Caitlin and her daughter Emma (Mileiah Vega), leading to a series of unsettling events.

Unlike the original version, this remake holds back on revealing the nanny’s motivations until late in the film, leaving viewers in the dark alongside the characters. While Winstead and Monroe deliver strong performances, they struggle to overcome a weak script that lacks the necessary tension and urgency to keep the audience engaged.

The film could have benefited from a more campy and over-the-top style, seen briefly in the final confrontation between Caitlin and Polly. However, by that point, it’s too little, too late to save the movie from its overall lackluster reception.

While the concept had potential, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle ultimately falls short in delivering the thrills and excitement expected from a thriller. With a rating of 2.5/5, this remake may not live up to its predecessor’s legacy.
