Disney Plus and Hulu Experience 7 Million Subscriber Decline After Jimmy Kimmel Suspension

In a recent report by Antenna, it was found that there was a combined loss of 7 million subscribers for Disney+ and Hulu following the brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show on ABC. Kimmel’s show was temporarily taken off the air after he made controversial comments in his opening monologue.

According to Antenna, around 3 million Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. canceled their service, which was higher than the typical three-month churn rate of 1.2 million. Similarly, Hulu saw 4.1 million cancellations, up from 1.9 million.

Despite the cancellations, the impact was short-lived as both Disney+ and Hulu added new subscribers. In September alone, Disney+ added 2.2 million subscribers, while Hulu added 2.1 million.

It’s uncertain how these fluctuations will affect the overall subscriber count for both platforms, as Disney has announced that they will no longer disclose quarterly subscriber data. As of the most recent fiscal period ending in June, Disney+ had 127.8 million subscribers globally, with 57.8 million in North America, while Hulu had 51.2 million subscribers.
